Mars Lander Game - Update

Well that was a short lived project.
After a month of development, the Mars Lander project is already ‘dead’.
So why did it die so quickly? It seems to suffer the same fate as many beginning open source projects that I’ve come across. You can’t just ‘wing it’. If you don’t have a plan, goals or direction on where you want a project to go then it will ultimately fail by indecision.

I’ve been meaning to get back into some game programming again, but I didn’t fell like starting doing something new. I wanted to help someone else and join a project and be part of a team again (kind of like when I was working on pioneer space sim).
This weekend I came across a post on the LÖVE game development forums. It is a game being written that is loosely based on a the 1979 Atari classic Lunar Lander but with a Mars Lander theme.

I had already purchased an earlier edition of this book a few years ago on my kindle (third edition). It was a great read however, I found the electronic format a little too clumsy for a reference book. You just can’t beat a dead tree version of a reference book sometimes.
While I was casually browsing Amazon, I saw that Practical Electronics for Inventors was on special so I took the opportunity to purchase the physical copy and later edition.

I’ve been messing around with the forth programming language lately. Yes I could run something like gforth or other interpreter on the desktop but its more fun to play with real hardware. My current setup of running a version of flashforth hosted on an ATMega328 chip was just too brittle and clumsy.
Then I read about the Scamp computer!
So what is a Scamp computer? It is a self-contained forth computer running its own version of flashforth on a stick.

After nearly 13 years in my current job as a Systems Engineer at Morgans Financial, a stock broking company.
Recently I have gotten back into doing some coding again, in particular, using the LÖVE framework and the language lua to make simple 2D based games. While I’ve played with other game engines such as Unity and Godot (Godot is my favorite right now) I just seem to prefer writing everything in scripts and code rather than messing around with an graphical editor.
Code Editor Normally I would use vim, but I just couldn’t get the workflow working how I liked it.

I started off this year with the best intentions of blogging more detail about my personal projects.
Well that didn’t go according to plan. Looking at my previous post dated 15th April and the lack of posts since then means that I failed. 2020 has been a crap year with COVID and the impact on people’s lives. I had grand ideas on things that I wanted to do and get done, and none of them happened.

While I’ve not been able to get out and about it has given me some time to do some cleanup and house-keeping of my environment, hobbies and interests.

It’s been a while since I last posted an update on the Whizz80 computer. I’ve been a bit slack in documenting my progress because each time I move a little step closer and it is more fun to keep building and designing rather than writing up documentation. However I have reached a bit of a milestone with a simple, yet working system so now is the time to pause and take note on what I’ve done so far.

I’ve spent this weekend migrating the old whizz80.com website from using GRAV to Hugo. To speed up the process I’m using the same workflow that I use for my blog site for the new whizz80.com site.
While I did enjoy using GRAV, I did find it a little bit clumsy with updating the website in comparison to Hugo. I was probably over complicating the process because I was using a GRAV plugin that would pull down changes from a github repository.

Welcome to the new blog layout.
After so many years of using a wordpress website, I have decided to switch to a static generated website using Hugo as the rendering engine. This should make the site a lot more faster and responsive as I don’t have to deal with the slowness and dependency of a database.
By using Hugo, I can simply create new pages/posts as markdown text files (and using my favorite editor - vim).

Some of my older ‘unfinished’ projects and ideas, such as AdventureWorld and MovieMonster, have been neglected. It might be a nice idea to convert them over to a Godot project as a learning exercise.
Who knows, it might encourage me to blog a little more often with progress updates.

The z80 development workflow I have come up with the following workflow:

System Backplane for the Whizz80

The system back plane for the Whizz80 has been redesigned and refined.
I’ve been using Eagle to design the schematic for the Whizz-80 computer. I originally started to hand wire parts of the circuits on prototyping PCB board but found that point to point wiring was just too hard, so I’ve now decided to get PCBs manufactured instead.
So I’m starting with the System back plane – this is a rather easy board to produce as it is almost a ‘strip board’ but with a custom silk screen

Whizz 80 System Design

The system design of the Whizz-80 computer is a little different to what most people seem to be creating. There are many designs of a z80 computer that are based around a single board. While a single board self contained computer is cool and trendy, it doesn’t really give you the flexibility to upgrade, change or expand the system when you want to try something new or add extra functionality. I’m intending on the system to grow and expand as I develop it (it is iterative process as I learn, so mistakes would be made).

I have created a simple No Connection symbol for Eagle CadSoft.
At the moment I have only 1 symbol/package included in this library and that is the ‘NO CONNECTION’ symbol. The intent is to add more things as I come across it.
No connection symbol for Eagle It is quite simple to use, it simply places an ‘x’ on the schematic. There is no PCB footprint (as there isn’t one) so it is purely for visual aesthetics.

The Whizz-80 is my latest electronic project that I am starting. It is a combination of hardware and software so it aligns both my passions.
My Whizz-80 computer will be a retro based computer using the Z80 CPU. The Z80 was used in early microcomputers (such as the Microbee and the TRS-80). It will however run it’s own operating system and it’s own specific hardware configuration. I don’t intend on making a clone, (there are plenty of emulators for that) but a unique computer just for me.

I’ve been playing around with the Arduino for a while now (offline to the blog) and while it is a great platform to get into the embedded arena (and electronics in general), I am yearning for something a little bit more, something beyond the Arduino.
I haven’t done a blog post in a while (I had great plans on posting my experiments and circuits as I learned) but the time it takes to create a post on a simple circuit that I built during the learning iteration process just didn’t work.

Learning to fail and how you move on from it: In my previous two posts I had designed and created a pcb layout for a simple 555 timer flasher. I thought it would be a simple thing to do because I really wanted to test the workflow on how to create a pcb from start to finish.
555 PCB with components After placing and soldering all the components on my pcb, and applying power to it, I expected to see some nice flashing lights just like my breadboard model was doing.

My 555 LED Flasher custom made pcb circuit finally arrived. Yay!
Previously I had designed this circuit and pcb layout as a test run (see previous post) and sent it off to OSHPark for manufacturing. It turned up in the post for last night.
It took about 3 weeks from time to placing the order to me receiving it, which seems quite reasonable for a part time hack like me. I don’t need high turn around times.

Update: My first printed circuit board doesn’t work – to see how it all when wrong look here.
My first printed circuit board has just been designed. I’ve been creating a couple of circuits now on a breadboard, but each time I wanted to try something else I would either have to dismantle the circuit to reuse the breadboard, or buy another breadboard (I have 3 now).
Sure I can always put the circuit on a prototype board or strip board, but I find they tend to get a little messy and they aren’t as neat.

I had played around with electronics in the past (like when I was about 10, my uncle bought me a “Dick Smith’s Funway into Electronics”) but most of it was just following along some diagrams and plans.

Today I have completed a little milestone and that is converting over Adventureworld’s tileset and maps into a format that can be easily read by lua.
The current map game data is in a format like this:
DATA "CMMMBBBDDDBBLLLLMMMCCCLLLMMMC.. I’ve decided to use the application Tiled to build up the tileset and maps which will make it much easier to visualize and adjust each screen. It also automatically generates some nice lua tables which will make it easier to import into the game as well.

I’m now back from hibernation after a long break from updating my blog. I’ve also spent a bit of time away from pioneer space sim.
I kind of got a little bit overwhelmed with the detail that pioneer space sim required. I just simply couldn’t keep up with the fast pace of some of the current developers, and it was becoming a chore. It just wasn’t “fun” anymore, so I decided to take a bit of a break from it for a while.

Lack of Osx Binary Updates

Some of you may have noticed a lack of OSX binary updates for pioneer space sim lately, and you would be correct with that observation.
With releases in the past, a .dmg file was manually generated on the 2nd Friday of every month, and the occasional ‘nightly’ builds were generated during the rest of the month.
The last .dmg file that was uploaded was back in April 2013 (tagged ‘alpha 33’) and there hasn’t been an OSX binary uploaded since.

I am now finally riding a bike to work! It has only been about 3 years in the making from when I originally decided to take the challenge till today.
I purchased a Avanti Blade 2.0 bike about 2 years ago, rode it for about 2 weeks, and then put it in the shed for the spiders to build their webs on.
Last year back in October I planned on riding my bike a little bit more seriously.

Yes, it has been a long time between blog updates. Maintaining a blog and keeping it updated with new content is harder than I realised. I have a brain full of thought and ideas, it is just getting it out of my head and into a readable format is the challenge.
It also comes down to being a little more organised. Most, if not all the time, when I finish up for the day it is usually too late to write up anything as I’m tired and it is time for sleep.

Yesterday I did my first bicycle ride of the season. A whole 8km.
Map of bike ride
While it might not be a hardcore bike ride, I haven’t ridden my bike since the start of the year. On top of that I also rode into work so there was the whole logistics of getting changed into work gear and riding home in the afternoon.
Mental note: Don’t have a few pints at the pub before a bike ride, it makes it so much harder to ride.

As I had been doing more things with my iMac lately, from using blender, to learning iOS apps with XCode, I was finding that my computer was slowing down somewhat. At the time it only had 4G of memory, which is more than adequate for most users, however I’m special and I tend to have many windows open, and on multiple workspaces. It was time for a memory upgrade.
So i went and purchased 16G (4x4G) of memory from Ramcity, (recommended by whirlpool forums) and i haven’t looked back.

Hello Internet, it’s been a month since my last update. I’ve been sick with the flu the past week or so.
I have also been absorbed into playing again, but this time with the tekkit mods. These mods add a much greater level of complexity, and playing on a PvP server also adds to the fun.
Hopefully there will be some more frequent updates soon as I get over this minecraft ‘addiction’ again.

This weekend my wife recently upgraded her Wacom tablet to an Intuos5 for use with her photography business. This meant that I inherited her old Wacom Intuos4. Yay! I’ve never used a tablet before, so I thought I would give it a try with using a Wacom Intuos4 tablet with blender.
And what a challenge it has been. At first I struggled with getting used to the device, as when you use blender you generally need a 3 button mouse.

Today one of my scripts at work was consuming lots of memory. Turns out that Powershell doesn’t handle garbage collection very well, it only runs on the completion of a script, however if you have a script that is in a continuous loop, garbage collection will not happen. Here is a handy hint to anyone writing scripts that don’t quit on how to force Powershell garbage collection.
Simply add the following line of code in your ‘leaking’ foreach or while loop

Last Friday (7th June 2012) I finally enrolled into the apple developer program. I originally registered as an apple developer back in 2010, however I never spent the extra money (I was cheap) to publish any apps (and at the time I was more interested in other languages). So now I am finally beginning iOS application development and it is exciting!
Beginning iOS Application Development Over the past few weeks I have been studying Objective-C manuals (the documentation that apple provides is quite extensive) and the more I had played around with the language, the more I enjoyed writing in it.

You can never underestimate the importance of backups – in particular for an online presence where your files and data are in the ‘cloud’. Most of the time people don’t appreciate the importance until it is too late. There really isn’t any excuse not to back up your files, especially when it is so easy to do. Here is how I’m currently doing it:
I’m currently using an awesome WordPress plugin called WordPress Backup to Dropbox to back up all my hosted WordPress websites up into my Dropbox account each night.

Currently I am running time machine with an external 1.5Tb USB drive, and had to be selective as to what i included in the backups. It just wasn’t good enough so this week I bought a drobo from eBay. Now I can do Time machine backups with a drobo.

The iPad was originally designed to be a consumption device, i.e. for reading, viewing and listening. It wasn’t designed to be a content creation device. Over time though, some of the apps have become more sophisticated.
Since getting my iPad from my lovely wife, I have been using it on my daily commute into work (an hour bus ride) to read the news, Facebook, read a magazine. Lately however I have been ‘creating’ on the iPad rather than being just a consumer.

I decided it was time to have a clean slate. I hadn’t updated the old blog for quite some time, and I wanted to try something a little different (like start a fresh and blog a little more often).
What better way to start anew by having a slate clean??
I will be posting up some old project pages over the coming weeks, so that there is some more content and it isn’t just a simple blog with a handful of empty posts… promise!
